about

Herein lie the results of my third attempt to make a recording for Kning Disk. The first was reluctantly aborted due to terrorist threats causing chaotic scenes at UK airports. The second was damaged beyond repair after the venue was invaded by drunks. And since you’re wondering – no, I wasn’t one of them. Not that night, at least.
This music was recorded alone in a dimly lit room with only my recently rebuilt six string and a couple of microphones for company. Amidst the bitter winter winds that pillaged the west coast of Sweden, and spiralling thoughts of my good friend Dave Tyack who had sadly passed away some four and a half years earlier – feelings triggered and magnified by the presence of his photograph upon a studio wall in Stockholm I had chanced across just days before. Reflections that would adopt considerably more significance on returning home to England the following day: The hill will not climb itself, indeed.
Other than the main theme of Smältugn (The Furnace) and a couple of melodies in the introduction, this record consists completely of improvisations upon a handful of different tunings, which is new ground for me. Perhaps the pauses of decision making are at times more audible than the guitar itself, and imperfections are laid bare. But I hope you can take something from it.
